| Analysis:
A typical Mike Milbury trade. He gives up too much to make a
splash on draft day. There are many who would argue that Milbury hurt
himself as much as he helped himself with the Yashin deal. He gets the
marquis player that he needs to see season tickets but it questionable
as to whether he really made his team more competitive. Yashin will
definitely help put the puck in the net, but he is a selfish,
defensively inept player who would have drastically needed a d-man
like Chara around to make up for his mistakes. As for the Senators
they win all-round. Spezza will be playing close to home and should be
a top line player. Chara is a monster who will clear the net better
than any d-man on the current roster. Muckalt is a solid two-way
player who will fit nicely on the 3rd line. Fantasy
Value: Look for Yashin's numbers to decrease 10-15%. Spezza will
have a good shot to make the team, but will probably not be rushed and
see most of his time on the 3rd line. Chara should see a drastic
increase in +/-, but don't count on him for his scoring. |

| Analysis:
This is a real noggin-scratcher. It's obvious that the Flames
want to be more competitive, but how they're going to accomplish it
with this deal and they're acquisition of Rob Niedermayer is a mystery
to us. The St. Louis Blues felt that Turek was no more than a regular
season goalie (probably a bit unfair, but still not a ringing
endorsement) so Calgary steps up, gives away a solid 'tender in
Brathwaite and two very promising prospects. For the Blues, they don't
really lose much. They had given up on Turek, and feel that Johnson
and Brathwaite can offer the same (or better). As well, they manage to
re-stock a farm system that was depleted last year in the Tkachuk
deal. Fantasy Value: Look for Turek's GAA to
rise as he faces more shots. Tkaczuk may get a shot at the 4th line
out of camp, but don't expect much. Brathwaite will see between 30-40
games if he stays in St. Louis. |

| Analysis:
Well, if you're a Flames fan this is strike three. First they
trade away Cory Stillman at the trade deadline, then they make the
deal above, and now they graciously give the Florida Panthers a much
needed boost in their marketing department. Now trading Bure isn't the
problem here. What really stumps us is that they picked up a player,
in Niedermayer, who has been plagued by concussion problems. Rob
Niedermayer is a poor man's Mike Peca without the grit and offensive
ability. Granted Bure was a headache- but is this really addition by
subtraction. Weimer was a good guy in the room - rough and tumble on
the ice - but the NHL is littered with guys like that (case in point
Rob Niedermayer). Niedermayer needs to become the type of player he
was as a rookie, rather than the over-rated pick he has beccme over
the last four years. We are stunned that that is all he could get for
Valeri Bure - a legitimate 25-30 goal guy? Fantasy Value: Look
for Bure to be ecstatic about playing with his brother - but that
won't translate into superstar numbers. Although 35 goals would not be
out of the question. Weimer, will bring a solid defensive conscience
to the Panthers, but not much offensive production. Who knows what
Niedermayer will do for the Flames. He has the skills to be a 30 goal
guy and with his new defensive skill-set, there is the potential for a
solid 2nd line center. |

| Analysis:
Milbury is at it again. While he has picked up a solid 2nd line
center, he has given up two teenagers that could become stars. We all
know what Peca will do. He should score 25 goals and be a defensive
stalwart for the Isles, but he will not be a superstar. Connolly, will
have a shot to become a #1 center and Pyatt could develop into a Keith
Tkachuk-type power forward. Fantasy Value: Assuming
Peca gets signed, he will produce in the 50-60 point range. He will
kill penalties and play on the powerplay. Pyatt and Connolly are
probably a year or two away from becoming very good players, but it
wouldn't be out of line to assume that both of them would push 40
points. |
