It is practically impossible to accurately know
which goalies are going to start and which are not.
However, here's a few tips.
- Check out injuries - even a slight injury
from a starting goalie will guarantee the backup some playing time (David
Aebischer for Patrick
Roy, Trevor
Kidd for Roberto
Luongo, Dwayne
Roloson for Manny
Fernandez).
- Who's Hot? - this is a little harder to
follow (because you also have to know coaches tendencies are but
generally if a goalie gets hot the coach will stick with him (Jani
Hurme for Patrick
Lalime, Brian
Boucher for Roman
Cechmanek).
- Avoid situations with no clear-cut
starter. This doesn't happen often but when it does you're just asking
for trouble ( Brent
Johnson and Fred
Brathwaite, Jeff
Hackett and Jose
Theodore - when they were both healthy).
- Back-to-Back Games - Anytime there are
back-to-back games you can pretty much count on the back-up to get some
time (especially when the team is on the road).
- Experienced/Overpaid Back-ups - You'll
have noticed that Arturs
Irbe is playing a lot less than he has in the past few years. Most
of that is related to the off-season acquisition of Tom
Barrasso.
