All this talk about whether Mario
Lemieux will be ready to play for the Canadian Olympic teams seems to
have missed one important thing that Fatnasy Hockey owners have been
asking for weeks - "When is he going to be back with the
Penguins?" Well, from what we understand, he's skating now - but that
doesn't mean a lot. It could be 2 to 3 weeks before he's back. For a guy
likely selected in the top 3 of any draft, this is a huge disappointment.

The Vincent
Lecavalier rumour mill is heating up. Lightning GM Rick
Dudley finally confirmed the worst kept secret in hockey - Vinnie
asked to be moved. This is not necessarily a deal that will be blocked by
money, but it will certainly get held up unless teams pony up the talent
to get the guy former Tampa owner Art Williams called the "Michael
Jordan of hockey." Dudley will be looking for a combination of
immediate help and young talent or decent picks. The Devils would seem to
have the best chance but if they move Jason
Arnott it could seriously disrupt team chemistry. A deal involving Bobby
Holik and Scott
Gomez is possible but the Devils would probably need a winger back and
in exchange would include a young d-man ( Mike
Commodore ) and/or a young winger ( Pierre
Dagenais ). The other two teams that would love to get Lecavalier are
Montreal and Ottawa. The Habs see Vinnie as the francophone knight in
shining armour who could lead them to the promised land. Too bad that they
don't have the talent to offer back. As for the Sens this could get
interesting. They have depth at all positions, except center. If they were
to create a package including a d-man ( Chris
Phillips or Sami
Salo ), a younger winger ( Petr
Schastlivy or Ivan
Ciernik ) and quite possibly Jason
Spezza, this could be a done deal.
