The Injury Factor

Injuries are just a part of life for NHL teams. Injuries to key players are something completely different. Teams like the Red Wings, Leafs, Blues and Islanders are going to be experiencing that for at least the first half of this NHL season. How will they adapt? We try and offer a few clues.

Player Team Out Until Potential Fill-In
Steve Yzerman January (at least) While no-one will replace Stevie Y, look for the 40-year old Igor Larionov to step up his play. As well, young guys like Jason Williams will have a lot expected of them.
Chris Pronger January (or later) Barrett Jackman and Mike Van Ryn will be thrust into the spotlight. They are the future of the Blues' blueline and will need to prove it now.
Gary Roberts February His grit will be harder to replace than his scoring. Look for Tom Fitzgerald to pick up the slack in that regard. Offensively the burden will fall on Alyn McCauley and Jonas Hoglund.
